How to Choose the Best Wedding Cruise

Not all cruise lines are built for weddings. Here is what to look for — and what to avoid — when choosing the ship that will host the most important day of your life.

How to Choose the Best Wedding Cruise

You have decided you want to get married at sea. Smart choice. There is nothing quite like exchanging vows on the open ocean — the horizon stretching in every direction, the light doing things it simply cannot do on land, and a venue that moves with you from one breathtaking backdrop to the next.

But here is where couples run into trouble: they start shopping cruise lines the same way they would shop a resort. They compare cabin categories, dining options, and entertainment packages. Those things matter — but they are not what makes a wedding cruise work.

Choosing the right ship for your wedding is a different exercise entirely. Here is how to approach it.

Start With Guest Count, Not Ship Size

The instinct is to assume a bigger ship means more options. In reality, the opposite is often true for weddings.

Mega-ships carrying 4,000 or 5,000 passengers are built for volume. Their event spaces are designed to turn over quickly, their staff-to-guest ratios are stretched thin, and your wedding is one of dozens of events happening that day. You will feel it.

Smaller, premium vessels — think 200 to 700 guests — operate on an entirely different logic. The crew knows your name. The event team has capacity to actually focus on your celebration. The spaces feel intimate rather than cavernous.

For most couples, the sweet spot is a ship where your wedding party represents a meaningful percentage of the passenger count. That is when the experience shifts from "event at sea" to something that genuinely feels like your day.

Understand What "Legal Ceremony at Sea" Actually Means

This is the detail that surprises more couples than any other.

A ceremony performed by a ship's captain is not automatically a legally binding marriage in most jurisdictions. The captain has authority to perform a ceremony — but whether that ceremony is recognized by your home country depends on the ship's flag state, the waters you are sailing in, and a tangle of international maritime law that varies by route.

Some cruise lines have worked through this complexity and can offer legally valid ceremonies on specific itineraries. Others offer beautiful symbolic ceremonies with the understanding that you will complete the legal paperwork before or after the voyage.

Neither option is wrong — but you need to know which one you are booking. A good travel advisor will walk you through this before you sign anything.

Evaluate the Dedicated Wedding Team

Every major cruise line will tell you they do weddings. What you want to know is whether they have a team that does only weddings, or whether your event coordinator is also managing shore excursions, spa bookings, and group dining reservations.

Ask directly: Who is my point of contact from booking through the day itself? How many weddings does this ship host per sailing? What is the handoff process between the shore-side planning team and the onboard crew?

The answers will tell you a great deal about how your day will actually be managed.

Think About Your Guests' Experience, Not Just Your Own

A wedding cruise is also a travel experience for everyone you have invited. That means the ship you choose needs to work for your grandmother who has never cruised before, your college friends who want to stay up until 2 AM, and the couple in your group who would rather spend a port day at a museum than on a beach excursion.

Look for ships with a range of dining options, genuine flexibility in daily programming, and itineraries that offer something for different travel styles. The best wedding cruises feel like a gift to your guests — not just a backdrop for your photos.

Match the Cruise Line to Your Aesthetic

This is more important than couples realize going in.

A contemporary cruise line with a lively, resort-style atmosphere will produce a very different wedding than a luxury yacht-style vessel with a quiet, curated feel. Neither is better — but one of them is right for you.

If your vision involves a candlelit dinner for 40 in a private dining room, a ship with a 3,000-seat main dining hall is not your venue. If you want your guests to have access to a full entertainment program and multiple pool decks, a 200-passenger expedition vessel may feel too quiet.

Be honest about the energy you want, and choose accordingly.

Consider the Itinerary as Part of the Wedding

The ports you visit are not just a backdrop — they are part of the experience you are creating for your guests. A Mediterranean itinerary with stops in Santorini and Dubrovnik tells a different story than a Caribbean route through St. Lucia and Barbados.

Think about what your guests will remember a year from now. The ceremony itself, yes — but also the morning they spent wandering a hillside village, the dinner at a harbor restaurant, the afternoon on a beach that felt like it belonged to you alone.

The itinerary is part of the wedding. Choose it with the same care you would give to the florals or the menu.

What to Ask Before You Book

Before committing to any ship or cruise line, get clear answers to these questions:

  • Is the ceremony legally binding, or symbolic? If symbolic, what is the process for the legal paperwork?
  • What is the maximum guest count for the ceremony venue and reception space?
  • Is there a dedicated wedding coordinator onboard, or does the event team handle multiple functions?
  • What is included in the base wedding package, and what are the most common add-on costs?
  • Can we customize the menu, florals, and décor — or are we working from a fixed package?
  • What happens if weather affects the ceremony location or timing?
  • What is the cancellation and change policy?

The answers to these questions will tell you more about the quality of the experience than any brochure will.

We put together a more detailed guide that walks through the full decision process — cruise line comparisons, legal ceremony considerations, guest experience planning, and the questions most couples forget to ask until it is too late.
